Green = Yes/Maybe (*always check the recipe and your ingredients to confirm)

When I was first thinking about making a coffee protein shake, I really wondered if it would even work. I mean, protein powder in coffee? Sounds disgusting.

But then I thought about it and realised – a mocha is just coffee with chocolate, so surely coffee with chocolate protein powder would also taste good?

Then protein powder can taste a little fake and bland, so I wondered if adding cream for some texture and Stevia for sweetness would round it off well.

Well, a short time later, I had my answer!

And the answer was that this protein coffee shake is absolutely amazing!

Why this coffee protein shake is amazing

This protein coffee shake is like a Starbucks protein drink

Okay, let’s get this clear from the outset. This protein coffee drink tastes really good. It’s got just the right consistency to make it taste luxurious, the coffee is present but not overwhelming, and the chocolate adds that as-mocha flavour to it that just seals the deal. It’s like making your own Starbucks protein drink! Or whatever your favourite coffee outlet is…

This is a high protein coffee – Who knew that protein powder in coffee would set you up so well for your day?!

Usually coffee doesn’t really have much to it by way of nutrients. Unless you are talking about high calorie, high sugar syrups that go in them. But because of the protein powder in the coffee, you are suddenly hit with around 20g extra of protein in a really convenient way!

Protein helps to make you feel full longer, and is a necessary building block of muscle. But protein shakes can taste horrible by themselves when just mixed with water. Not with this protein coffee drink! This is exactly like a coffee flavored protein shake. It tastes good, AND it gets you your muscle building protein!

This is a high protein coffee that you need in your life, especially if you like a coffee in the morning, and protein for building muscle.

It turns protein powder in coffee can actually be good! Who knew?!

This is a Keto coffee protein shake

For those of you on a Ketogenic diet, this coffee protein shake is for you. Coming in at a measly 2.5g of net carbs, yet delivering 227.3kcal, this coffee chocolate protein shake will give you one of your meals but without you risking going over your net carb allowance. That’s mostly thanks to the high fat (15g) and high protein (20.4g) content. This is basically like a Bulletproof coffee protein shake, but without the butter or coconut oil!

Things to look out for and swaps

I personally used Stevia in this recipe, but you may have a natural sweetener of choice that you like to use instead. Go ahead! The flavour in this chocolate coffee protein shake comes from the coffee and the chocolate that are in it. The sweetener is merely there to give it a little extra boost.

If you want yours colder, more like an iced coffee, feel free to add some ice. I would, however, adjust the brewed coffee content to offset it, otherwise it could end up a little watery.

As ever with a protein shake smoothie, whatever chocolate protein powder you use will greatly affect the quality of the flavour. I personally use Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein, as it has a good flavour and is pretty low carb. Any protein powder with a deep chocolate flavour will serve you well.

Supplements you can add to your protein coffee drink

I would personally not add anything that has too much flavour to this recipe, as it will suddenly not taste like a Starbucks protein drink! You want to keep this as a coffee flavored protein shake, not a medicine flavored protein coffee! Gross!

You could, however, get away with supplements with less flavour, such as Psyllium Husks for extra fibre.
